Walleye, Lakers and Pike on Cabonga Reservoir
I'll be joining a group of friends for 4 days of fishing in late June, this time we head up to Cabonga reservoir, a massive body of water north of Mont Laurier.
Mike picked up some bathymetric maps which I will install on my GPS, of course I will be bringing my boat - I don't really like going to large lakes and use the small boats the outfitters rent, when the wind picks up in those areas of northern Quebec, you want to have a large boat for safety and comfort.
I heard there are millions of places to hit bottom so I'll be riding the boat safely (no hot-dogging!)
If any of you guys have been there before, I would love to hear about it. Which sectors did you fish, what kind of fish did you catch, which techniques did you try, etc.
I don't remember the name of the outfitter where we will be staying, but we will have larger boats with big motors, so we should be able to cover a good portion of the lake from where we will be staying.

We are stayiung at Deer Horn Lodge also. One week to go... can't wait.
Any tips on specific areas that may be more productive for walleye (we won't be fishing for lakers).
Of course we already have a few spots highlighted on our bathymetric maps, but a real life perspective would be appreciated.
hey marc,
i will look on my maps and send you some spots mid week. maybe tomorrow night if i have time.stef has many spots marked on the map at the cash register.my group fishes 2 spots that are 15 mins from the lodge, depending on boat/motor.

stef calls me rick from new jersey
go to the "S" or le "S". watch out for the 2 rocks. they are identified by floating bleach jugs. we fish near the first rock. we have 2 more spots along the way. i will have to scan the map and can email it to you wed.
as for technique, i use a plain lead ballhead jig with a worm. 3/8 oz. this year they also hit on chartreuse and minnow.
That would be so awesome, I guess I'll have to speak to Stephane about you and the famous S spot, do send me some info by email, marc.poirier AT gmail DOT com (trying to avoid all the spammers...)
You said you have bathospheric maps of Cabonga for your GPS? What brand of GPS do you use and what is the source of these maps. I have fished from Deer Horn Lodge over the past 30 years (not every year, though) and only recently did I start bringing a GPS. I have many track files, some with depth waypoints, too, of the places I have fished but have always wanted a bathospheric map of the reservoir. Please feel free to email me directly eatsleepfish at gmail dot com. Unfortunately, I am not going this year due to family planning issues and no boat but next year is in the offing.

I use a Garmin GPS, I believe we used the TRAK map for Garmin, it is available but this is only a recent addition to their maps, you can get it on their site - at least that's what I think Mike did.

Hi Marc and canuckusa,

We also fish Cabonga from Deerhorn Lodge. On overcast, rainy, windy days, we troll rapalas in 7 feet of water along windy shores. On sunny days, we fish submerged rocks in 12-15 feet of water. At dusk, we fish sandy shoals near islands to the south using nightcrawlers and slip bobber rigs or with jigs.
Hi everyone,
I am coming up to Cabonga and staying at Pavillon Cabonga.
I am a walleye fisherman from North Carolina- yes, North Carolina.
I typically go to Sask or upper ontario but this year we want to try another venue.
I would love to get a hold of some good maps and maybe even a few waypoints.
I heard there were a lot of rocks, that doesn't sit well with me since 3 years ago I tore out a lower ubit in Limestaone lake Sask and ended up paying for a new one at 2K US- back when the dollar was 1= 1.58 canadian- ouch!
Any tips ?
My family has made a tradition out of going to Cabonga. My grandfather has been going up there since he was 10. He is now 70. You do the math. This year will be my 7th year going to pavillion cabonga and i love it! unless you know the lake very well a GPS is an absolute necessity. The lake is amazing but going anymore than a half a mile from camp can get you lost quick. And watch out for the rocks and logs sticking just under the water they are killers. We fish with small 12 foot boats with 25 horse engines and they do the job just fine. they are sturdy enough in the win and go along at a pretty good pace. The can really take a beating. Cabonga is an amazing place and it will leave me with an everlasting memory. I would highly recommend bring hotdogs and all the fixing with you in the boat and stopping at one of the thousands of islands for lunch its a great time. just make sure to pick up when your done. Hope you have a good time I certainly do
