GPS Bathymetric Maps for the Saint Lawrence River

I have been a user of GPS technology for about 5 years now. I still use the first unit I bought, which is the Garmin eTrex Legend. This unit is a handheld model with mapping capabilities. Until this year, there were no bathymetric maps available for my unit, which made planning "on the fly" or ahead of time nearly impossible, other than using paper bathymetric maps and attempting to create waypoints with the map's coordinates, which was highly impractical, in fact I never got it to work correctly.

So I have been looking for bathymetric maps of canadian lakes and rivers for a long long time and never did find anything good. The Garmin BlueChart Americas maps did not contain anything from Canada. This just changed. The new v6.5 of Garmin's BlueChart Americas contains at least some canadian rivers and lakes, and they are precisely the ones I need so badly. I ordered mine online, it cost me $159 CAD plus taxes and shipping, I got the CD-ROM the very next day, installed it, and transferred maps to my GPS unit very easily. Now I spend quite a bit of time looking for walleye structure in the Saint Lawrence river, specifically between Lac Saint François and Lac Saint Pierre. I use the computer's large screen to locate good potential spots, I mark them with waypoints, tag them properly with metadata (name, category, depth, etc), and even create routes for steep drop offs that require jigging while slowly moving across long distances.

I can hoestly say this purchase is the most significant I have made yet in terms of fishing technology, it will allow me to search for new spots without leaving my computer, which means much more productive fishing for me and my friends. Hopefully they will release more canadian lake maps soon. I would love to get my hands on maps for specific areas, such as Abitibi for example, or places like the Gouin reservoir for example.

Hi Marc,

I'm enjoying your site, and love fishing for pike and smallmouth on the St. Lawrence River (the American side along the NY border.) Thanks for listing me in your great fishing sites. Shoot me an email at fishingjones2003@yahoo.com when you get the chance.
